Quitting a job is a big deal and many people will hesitate to quit even when quitting might be the best thing. Many people stay stuck in unhealthy work situations because they do not feel that their mental health is a legitimate reason to quit. If your mental health is suffering because of your job or for another reason, you may need a break from regular work. Toxic Work Environment

If you are in a toxic work environment, it will take a toll on your mental health. A toxic work environment can look like harassment, bullying, unhealthy work hours, work that invades your personal life, and many other things. If you find that work is dragging you down emotionally, or that unhealthy behaviors are being tolerated there, you may need to consider your mental health and how you can protect it.

Personal Issues Outside of Work

Even if you are not in a toxic work environment, you may find that, because of other personal issues, you need a break from work so that you can focus on your mental health. When people are grieving the loss of a loved one, going through a divorce, dealing with depression, anxiety, or any other mental health issue, the burden of daily work could add to their distress. Planning for a mental health break from work could be the best thing you can do in order to heal and thrive in the long term.

How to Take a Mental Health Break

If you feel that you need a mental health break from work, you could talk with your human resources department to find out what options you have for mental health leave. Some companies do provide this for their employees. If this is not an option for you, you may simply need to consider quitting your job and living off your savings for a while. If you have a partner, you may want to discuss with your partner the possibility of switching to a single income for a while to protect your mental health.

Your long-term success will be dependent on how you handle your mental health now. Remember, mental health is a priority.
